Gustav von Schulthess MD, PhDProfessor and Chair Nuclear Medicine performs diagnostic imaging examinations and metabolic therapies. A variety of radioactively labelled substances make it possible to view metabolic processes in the body, this in contrast to radiological examinations, which mainly depict anatomy. Nuclear Medicine at the University hospital operates one of the worlds’ leading PET centers. After introducing PET in 1993, the worlds’ first clinical PET-CT was installed here in 2001. Since then over 20’000 clinical PET-CT exams have been performed on two state-of-the-art scanners. PET-CT is important in diagnosis and therapy monitoring, with a large portion of the patients examined suffering from cancer. A second focus of our service is on cardiac imaging, where the introduction of hybrid myocardial perfusion-coronary CT imaging was pioneered (image of the year award: society of Nuclear Medicine 2006), in which we have gained important clinical expertise. We also offer all established standard Nuclear Medicine examinations and metabolic therapies. Our outstanding expertise and infrastructure facilitate close collaboration with our other clinical services and the industry, with research projects comprising brain-, heart- tumor- and infection imaging. Areas of Specialization: Oncology: Staging of cancer diseases using PET-CT Heart: Non-invasive cardiac imaging with the CT coronary angiography and nuclear cardiology including SPECT, PET, PET/CT Thyroid: Diagnosis and therapy of thyroid diseases Brain: Diagnosis of multiple brain diseases using PET
