Eyesight is one of our most valuable senses. The eyes and visual system are complicated and fascinating. The Department of Ophthalmology provides a wide range of treatments for patients with vision problems due to eye diseases or injuries. Experienced medical personnel involved in patient care, continuous research and teaching enables solid and safe treatments based on state of the art scientific knowledge.

The Department of Ophthalmology in the University Hospital Zurich has a long and rich tradition. For almost 150 years, patients with eye diseases have been treated here and young professionals have been trained in the newest discoveries in the field of ophthalmology. Inpatients receive treatment in the Ophthalmology Ward where dedicated physicians and nursing teams are available around the clock. In the large outpatient clinic, eye diseases and injuries are examined and treated with the best care possible. Research focuses on the following fields: basic biomolecular research in heredo-retinal diseases, clinical research in neuro-ophthalmology, strabology, retinal diseases, glaucoma, corneal diseases and oculoplastics.
